Managing Pet Odor in 3 Ways

February 26, 2019

Three years ago this month, we adopted Bentley into our family. He was born just a week before our second human child Luke, making it easy to recall his age.  Our sweet dachshund mix from the rescue didn't respond to his name Sonny or Sunny (although this fit his sweet, happy disposition).  Not even a turn on his head. We were pretty sure this wasn't his name.  After going back and forth with a few names, my husband and I landed on Bentley.  It was one he responded to!

Bentley joined our family when he was just nine months old. I'm not sure what I was thinking - I had a two year old, a nine month old baby and a surprise baby on the way.  Yet, Bentley was just meant to be part of our family.  When Bentley was little, he had a horrible virus called Parvo and was extremely lucky to live through it. He is truly the sweetest dog and he has such a sweet love and bond with the kids. Due to his past Parvo, he was left with a sensitive gut and many allergies. We soon discovered that this also added a stronger dog scent and it smelled like "dog" every time I walked in the house. Do you know what I am talking about?

Perhaps you have had a pet for many years and are looking for a way to make cleaning up easier and make your house smell fresh.  I discovered a few products from Swiffer + Febreze that helped me not sweat having a dog and all the cleanups that come along with pet ownership. Any relationship has ups and downs, but I love how Swiffer + Febreze pet products minimize the stress when it comes to cleaning up after our furry family members.

There are three spaces to consider when cleaning up your dog or cat: floors, fabric and air.

FLOORS:

When you cross the threshold to owning a fur baby, you soon realize it comes with fur - LOTS of fur.  And that fur finds it's way to land on EVERY possible surface, like glitter from your four year old's craft project. Little piles of fur spread to corners or float their way throughout each room.  My friend and I used to laugh so much when fur would be stuck to the tape that we wrapped our presents in around Christmas. Fur is the gift your pets keep giving. I am not sure there is anything more irritating than cleaning up the excess fur around the house.

I found an easy and effective solution:  I am able to clean up the excess fur and pet dander from my hardwood and tile floors easily with the Swiffer Sweeper Dry and Wet Pet Refills.  It has never been easier to clean, seriously! Each refill pad sticks to the bottom of the Swiffer Sweeper and WetJet and off you go grabbing all the pet dander, fur and dirt around the floor. Best of all, when you are done cleaning the floors, you simply lift off the Swiffer Dry and Wet Pet Refill and throw it away - clean up is as easy as that!

 AIR:

So what about the smell of dogs? There is nothing worse than coming home and being smacked in the face with the odor of DOG.  We love you furry friend, but your smell is not so becoming. Now you can not just disguise, but really trap and lock the odor with Febreze AIR Heavy Duty Pet Odor Eliminator.  I like to spray in the open air throughout the rooms of our house. It is especially handy to freshen up the house before company arrives. Just a few sprays and you have a fresh scent throughout the room. There is nothing easier and effective to combat the smell of your pet.

FABRIC:

Consider the places where your dog lays down or if they jump up on the furniture. Those often get the smell of your pet buried down into the fabric. Even though we have been pretty good about training Bentley not to hop on our sofas and chairs, he can be a little naughty when we are gone! Last year when we took a vacation, my Mother in Law would drop by and feed him and he picked up the habit of making the sofa his spot to rest.  Whatever your stance on is with pets on the couch, you may need to freshen that fabric! Spray a little Febreze FABRIC Pet Odor Eliminator on your furniture to trap and lock the odor. Don't forget carpet and pillows your pet might sleep on.  It's perfect for freshening the smell in between washes.

Our bond with Bentley is so unique. I can't imagine our life without him. It's nice to have something that simplifies cleaning up after him from day to day! My kids love helping me push the Swiffer Sweeper and WetJet and spray Febreze AIR Heavy Duty Pet Odor Eliminator and Febreze FABRIC Pet Odor Eliminator around needed parts of the house. Be sure to pick up your own at Kroger family stores (Ralph's for those in Southern California)!
