When we added Joshua, baby number four, to our family, our house became as busy as grand central
station at commute hour. If there is one thing I have learned in hacking the “mom life”, it is that systems and shortcuts are your friend. This is the season to be present with our kids and make the most of memories. Yet life is full of distractions and things that take away our time, rather than give to it. Our kids need us to be there to look them in the eye, give them tender hugs after celebration and times of disappointment and to get messy with them. Sometimes that means art projects spread out on the dining room table or kicking the soccer ball outside with them. Time is truly our most valuable resource, and relationships give us the most meaning. I wanted to share some hacks on how to get your precious time back, so you can spend it with the ones you love.
Hack 1 - Make Meal-time Simpler with Technology
Juggling a newborn and/or chasing toddlers is no joke. The fact that I consider sitting down for a cup of coffee as luxurious “me time” speaks volumes, right? What if you could preheat your oven from another room while nursing or giving the baby a bottle - that would be LIFE CHANGING, right? Well, dreams can come true. I can control my Whirlpool® Smart Slide-in Range by voice or by my phone in the app, so no matter what I’ve got my hands full with dinner, it won’t suffer. I can use voice control with a compatible voice-enabled device 3. I can speak simple voice commands with smart voice assistants including Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to preheat or cook, so I can focus on my family or that cup of coffee. We can use our smartphones or tablets to send multiple cooking instructions all at once – multi-tasking in the kitchen at its finest!
Whirlpool’s® leading-edge connected kitchen innovations also help make meal prep easier. I can send
cooking instructions straight to my Whirlpool® Smart Slide-in Range or use Yummly®’s step-by-step video tutorials when I need that extra help on busy days. 4 The step-by-step video tutorials are fun and easy to do!
We have been getting a lot of use out of our convection microwave oven as well. Like the Smart Slide in Range, it too has connected features that let me send cooking instructions to my Smart Over-the-Range Microwave right from my smartphone. The fact that it is a microwave and oven in one has been invaluable! For Thanksgiving, we cooked the turkey in the range, but were able to also bake a casserole at the same time in the microwave.
Hack 2 - Have Your Children Engage in Cleaning Habits
We try to instill pick- up and cleaning habits from a young age. Penelope, my two-year- old, places her soiled clothing in the laundry hamper we all nicknamed “the dirty pile.”. At meal time, we make it a habit for kids to set their dishes by the sink. My five- year- old, Sienna, likes to help me load the dishwasher with plates, cups and silverware. Having children engage in cleaning routines not only helps take some of the burden off you, but it benefits them in the long term.
What if they take a little longer to load the dishes than I would? Not an issue! Our Whirlpool Smart
Dishwasher has a Download & Go™ option that I love. 3 We can be at school and I can remotely turn on the dishwasher with my smartphone. Another great feature? It has 35% more rack space with the third level rack to load more dishes. 7 I love the extra room for the hard- to- fit items.
Hack 3 - Pack Lunches and Snacks the Night Before
Mornings are pretty hectic around here. It is hands-down our busiest hour of the day. We have to make
sure everyone gets fed, dressed, and has their hair brushed before they leave for school. One thing that has helped shave off a little time is making lunches and snacks the night before. You may need that extra time in the morning to “encourage” your toddler to put their shoes on. If I am lucky, I sometimes have time to enjoy a cup of coffee before we all run out the door. We allllll need that moment, don’t we mamas?
Hack 4 - Declutter
We live in the age of choices, but often having too many choices can be paralyzing. Chances are you have over 100,000 individual items in your home. Every item you own requires time and attention to be maintained and/or organized. By simply reducing the number of items you have in the home, you reduce the time caring for and storing those items. In turn, you get some of your time and freedom back.
As a mom of four, this has proved especially difficult. We have clothing for four children in different sizes, eventually four bicycles and four backpacks, lunch boxes and everything they need to live their daily lives. We’ve all heard we need to declutter, but simplifying your home can work wonders for your mental clarity (AND sanity, if we are being real). A few less items to polish, clean, and detail can mean more precious time with your loved ones. The test I try to give every item: Does it bring me joy or is it useful? You can also cut down on paper cutter by having bills and other documents sent to you electronically.
What hacks have you discovered that have given you your time back?
